Caffeine What It Is And What It Does Caffeine is a drug that acts as a stimulant, which excites the body and increases the heart rate, and makes the senses go into overload (only in very high doses). You will find caffeine in lots of foods and drinks, some of which you would not have thought would contain it, Cocoa, Chocolate and Tea. Also in the more obvious foods; Cola drinks, and Coffee. All of these contain base ingredients that come from the seeds, leaves and nuts of various plants. It Has Medical Uses: Caffeine in its natural form is a white crystalline powder. Which can be taken in tablet form or in special injections. Mostly taken by mouth in a solid tablet form. Caffeine has a number of vital medical roles and uses: - It is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) when linked to serve headaches

The amounts of caffeine contained in familiar things: (mg =milligrams) Headache tablets: 30-100mg Cup of instant coffee: 30-100mg Stimulant drinks: 100-250mg Cup of filter coffee: 40-180mg Cup of Tea: 10-90mg 10oz Cola Drink: 20-45mg Chocolate Bar: 20-25mg A fatal dose of Caffeine for an adult is considered to be about 10,000 mg (10grams). As with all drugs, far smaller doses can be fatal for children and young people. The Effects and Dangers Caffeine, like all drugs will affect each person differently. Just a couple of cups of coffee or tea can increase alertness, produce a mild feeling of happiness and even delay sleep and tiredness. Your senses may become more active, but it is not proved that this will help your ability to think. Low doses of caffeine on a daily basis probably do no harm to healthy adults. At high doses the senses are more aware, have a greater sensitivity to pain and touch and a ringing in the ears. High anxiety and concern have been seen when very high doses are taken. Mild forms of dependence may occur from taking high doses of caffeine, i.e. over 6 cups of high strength tea or coffee a day. Caffeine taken just before bed can: - Make getting to sleep more difficult
- Reduce the time you are asleep
- Effect the quality of your sleeping
If you take hundreds of milligrams of caffeine it can make you: - Easily annoyed.
- Restless.
- Have difficulty sleeping.
- Have a rapid heart rate, with increased blood pressure.
Very high level of Caffeine (1000-2000mg) will: - Give you an abnormal heart rate
- Make you fell agitated and stressed
- Create high blood sugar levels
Long term Effects: (This my come from use high daily doses) - Very servere sleep loss and insomnia
- Depression and anxiety
- Serious stomach conditions
- Abnormal heart rate, and irregular beats
Worth Taking Note: NASA has undertaken some experiments, where spiders where fed different drugs, including Marijuana, Amphetamine, Caffeine and Chloral Hydrate.
