Condoms - Myths and Facts

"Did you know that a bit of clingfilm wrapped around your bits will work just as well as a condom?" - Nope, neither did we -  because it's a load of nonsense and more importantly - won't protect you OR your partner from STI's and unwanted pregnancy.

Yeah, there's loads of stupid myths surrounding the use of condoms, and unless you know the real facts they can be very misleading and even dangerous....

The Facts....

  • Whatever you've heard, you do not need a prescription to get condoms. They are readily available from supermarkets, corner shops, vending machines - you can even get them free from family planning clinics.
  • Condoms are the only effective way or preventing STI's if used properly and consistently, they're nearly 100% effective at preventing HIV if used correctly. Though they can't prevent Crabs... so watch out.
  • Condoms are also a really reliable  way of preventing unwanted pregnancy, they're about 94% effective, if used correctly.
  • Unlike other contraceptive methods like the pill, condoms are only needed for when you have sex and don't need to be "taken" all the time.
  • Yes, it's true - condoms are available in various shapes, flavours and textures to heighten the experience of making lurrrrrve.
  • Condoms can help to protect women from cancer of the cervix.
  • Condoms do in fact, make sex less messy!
  • If they carry the Kite Mark and are stored properly (not too hot, not too cold) - condoms can be good for up to 5 years (3 years if covered in spermicide) but always check the expiry date though!
  • There's nothing wrong with using a bit of lubricant to make it go a bit smoother BUT don't use stuff like vaseline or oil as it will damage the condom use Spermicides or water-based lubricants instead.
  • Yes yes, condoms DO come in slightly different sizes. So if you're worried that your particular brand doesn't fit very well then you will be able to find one that does.

The Myths and Nonsense....

  • Just because you think that condoms smell funny, doesn't mean you shouldn't use them!
  • No! Just because you think you haven't got a STI doesn't mean you don't need to use a condom. Some STI's don't have any symptoms - so how can you be sure? The main reason people don't use condoms is because they don't take the risks seriously, whiich is stupid as the rate of infection is increasing all the time. So don't be a fool cover your tool.
  •  Despite what you may have heard - condoms have no medical side effects. So no, they're not gonna cut off your circulation or make anything "fall off"!
  • Don't always keep them in your wallet, as the heat and the conditions will make the condom useless, pop one in there if you're going out and getting lucky, but otherwise keep them in a cool place to store.
  • "My partner won't think I love them if I use a condom" - RUBBISH! by using a condom you're being responsible and considerate to your partner, protecting them from unplanned pregnancy and STI's.
  • So, you think you can just "pull out" before anything happens? - this is nonsense. Fluids released BEFORE ejaculation contain sperm as well you know and you won't even know anything about it....
  • "Yeah, but sex doesn't feel as good when I wear a condom" - once again, this is rubbish, condom latex can now be so thin you won't even feel like you're wearing one.
  • The main reason why condoms fail isn't because they're dodgy (they won't be if they carry the official kitemark) it's because the people using them make mistakes. So blaming the maker is no good and practise beforehand makes perfect...well nearly.
  • "Ribbed and Novelty Condoms are useless" - This is untrue, as long as they carry an official kitemark then they're good to go.

Don't be embarassed, be responsible! - Condoms are an essential necessity of modern life for many people and remember the three c's when using: Carefully, Consistently and Correctly

(always be aware that sex under the age of 16 is illegal)
