Work In Progress In Manchester

Shambles Shops

This will form another designer shopping area, facing Marks & Spencer along New Cathedral Street. This street leads to Exchange Square and The Triangle.

The Printworks

Due to open in Autumn 2000, this complex will also face the Exchange Square. The Printworks itself, was formerly the print centre for the Daily Mirror group. It will be transformed into a four storey urban entertainment centre. This will contain a 20 screen UCI cinema, including the North West's first IMAX cinema. The complex will also include a Hard Rock Café, which will contain rock memorabilia from local Manchester Act; Oasis, The Hollies, Simply Red and The Smith's.

The Millennium Quarter

This area will contain the URBIS due to open in 2001, which will be placed within a City Park. The URBIS will be Manchester's Millennium project and will be like nothing else in the world. It will lie just north of the Corn Exchange, facing the old Cathedral. Initial designs of the building show it will look unique, often described as a 'Glass Ski Jump' because of the shape it will take once completed. The face of the building will be covered completed by glass, enabling people to look both in and out. The purpose of the URBIS is to show visitors what the experience of a modern city is like, not just Manchester. One of the proposed features is that of a 'Wonderwall', where real-time images from other cities will be shown. The entire building will be filled with music, sounds, poetry, films and computer-generated images, which will show every imaginable sensation of the modern city - both good and frightening. In essence it will show everything a city has to offer.

The result of this regeneration will make Manchester one of the most vibrant and unique cities in Europe. This can only be enhanced when the Commonwealth Games comes to Manchester in 2002.
