Confidence and Confidence building

People often think that if you are not confident from birth then you will never be confident at all. They could never be more wrong.

A lot of people become very self-confident when something successful has happened in their lives. This is because they know that they are capable of doing something successful and the feel that they could do it again. They also feel that they are able to reach their full potential and they feel that they want to show this to other people.

If you feel that you totally lack any form of self-confidence then it would be a good idea to read the following tips:

  • Set some small targets or goals for yourself. Once you have met these targets or goals you should feel more positive about yourself and then you should be able to set new targets or goals. After many small targets you should be able to set slightly bigger goals. This should help you to feel that you can do anything you want if you set your mind to it.

  • Try and do new things, things that you have never done before. They don’t have to be big. It could be anything from answering a question in your maths lesson (where you have never talked to the teacher before and you just sit in the corner, quite as a mouse) or it could be something drastic like jumping off a bridge (with a chord of course!). If it does succeed or not, the thought of trying something new should make you feel that you are confident enough to try new things out.

  • Prepare yourself for tasks, which may need any form of confidence such as job interviews or giving talks to people of your own age. If you are fully prepared then you will come across as more relaxed to the people you are with, which automatically makes you more confident.

  • A good preparation method is through role-plays. For example if you were going to give a speech to your form group about how wonderful pupiline is then write it and read it to your dog, whether he's interested or not. You could also do something similar for job interviews, ask a member of your family or a friend to pretend to be an employer who is interviewing you. This will help you to be prepared as well as helping build the confidence you need.

  • Constantly remind yourself of good skills and qualities.

You must remember that no one is totally confident. A lot of people manage to look confident on the outside and feel completely useless inside. Confidence is a good skill to have and looks good on your CV but it is one quality that can always be improved. You must remember this one bit of advise, which I find myself constantly telling myself or my mates…'You can do anything if you put your mind to it!'
