The Science of a Hangover

'Ahhhhhh shut up, I've got a headache.'

'Well I've got no sympathy for you whatsoever.'

Sound familiar to you? Well if it does then you've probably been drinking far too much and if it doesn't then you've been the clever one.

Yes that's right, we're talking the morning after the night before...The Hangover, nature's way of telling you that what you've done shouldn't be repeated too often. Hangovers can completely incapacitate you to the point that leaving bed seems like the hardest thing you will ever have to do in your life. Plus they make your head feel like it's been hit by hammer, they unsettle your stomach and make you puke giving, make your mouth taste like the pub floor and finally make you feel really really sorry for yourself as well as anxious on what exactly happened the night before.

However does anyone know exactly why hangovers come about? Well if you read on and find out it might help you a little bit in coping with things in the future.....

Another word for drunkenness is intoxication and there is a reason for this as alcohol is one hell of a poisonous substance, especially when you've got too much of the loopy juice in your body. You know how it takes time for the liver to breakdown what you've been chucking down yer neck all night, well it does a good job, but it can't completely rid your sorry body of all the nasty chemicals alcohol produces. It can't detoxify all the alcohol in your body and a toxic substance is produced, which gives you those nasty effects.

Recent research has shown that it's one of the by-products of alcohol, acetaldehyde, which is the nasty stuff that scientifically causes the worst elements of your hangover. When you've drunk something alcoholic the body breaks it down into different chemical substances, which one is acetaldehyde. This is eventually broken down into something less harmful but in the meantime it plays havoc with you, by messing with your brain. If you add to this; dehydration due to lack of water in your body as alcohol makes you go to the toilet more and depletes the bodies water as well as depleted minerals short-circuiting your nervous system and low blood sugar you're gonna get the following happen to you;

  • Headache
  • Dry mouth
  • Puking
  • Nausea
  • Feeling twitchy nerves
  • Pessimism
  • Temporary suspension of the laws of gravity

Apart from the amount you've drunk, your hangover will feel worse; the older you are, the lower your weight, if you've drunk a lot in a short space of time or drunk stupid combinations.

Although you've only got yourself to blame are a few tips to overcome the enormous pain;

  • Stay in bed and rest, as you won't have slept properly, it's the only way the body will recover
  • Drink loads of water to get rid of the dehydration
  • Avoid tea, coffee or more alcohol, despite what people tell you
  • Try and eat something
  • Don't take any headache tablets
  • Go to the toilet a lot

There you go, hangovers explained, now if one of these doesn't teach you to cut down make sure that you don't develop a drinking problem.
