Redevelopment and Regeneration in Manchester City Centre Saturday 15 June 1996 - A Blessing In Disguise?
This day was a fatal one for the heart of the city of Manchester. It witnessed the devastation of large parts of the city centre by a 3,300 lb. Bomb. Despite this destruction, planners saw a great opportunity, as in many areas, buildings were destroyed or needed a lot of restoration. This gave the chance to reinvigorate, re-design and regenerate Manchester City Centre.
Immediately after the bomb exploded the Government and Manchester City Council created a Task Force, known as MANCHESTER MILLENNIUM LTD. The aim, make Manchester City Centre safe and to redevelop and regenerate the City Centre.
The first step of this regeneration was to hold an international design competition in order to create a Master Plan. EDAW, a London based Architect Company won. Producing the EDAW Master Plan, which provided most of the ideas behind the regeneration of the city. Most of these ideas would have taken much longer to implement if there had been no bomb - in this sense it was a blessing in disguise.
