Work Expereience Stories: Pete's Work Experience As A Computer Technician @ Strident Computer Services

It came to that time of year at school, where our normally dull careers lesson was graced by the presence of the careers officer stating "You'll all be doing your work experience in these two weeks... [interlude] ...Look at the board to arrange it yourself". What??? - Arrange it yourself?, it meant work. So in order not to get left with the dregs off I went to get myself a good placement.

Looking at the list I chose one I thought was looking good - hmmm computing technician (I dream of cup of tea...), and then got my dad to write the letter asking for the placement (although this isn't supposed to happen - its the best way to get a decent application letter written)

About a week later came the reply that they wanted to interview me, (well done dad i thought to myself)
yada yada yada - all to say, interview yes you can have the placement, blah blah blah...

So then it came to the actual work experience. Arriving spritely and early on the first monday I was met and taken to the office and introduced to the team. I would be working with one of the technicians, both in the office and during visits to customers. The whole of the team were really friendly and made me feel at home. In the two week period I travelled all over East Anglia and London visiting customers, which I found a very valuable experience as it was my first real taste of the world of work.

The usual assumption is that 'work experience boy' = 'tea maker', and although I can say I did make some tea for people it was off my own back and I had loads of cool jobs whilst i was there. Some other points of note include a brick through office window, and some office politics (less said the better) but all-in-all a very good experience that pointed me firmly in the direction of work that I wish to follow.
