Big Brother - Big Success Or Biggest Load Of Rubbish Ever!

Big Brother has been this summers world wide success. Starting in places like Sweden and Holland it has now moved to Britain, USA and other countries around the world. So why is this programme getting the world talking? What is so special about it?

For those who have not got swept up in all the talk of Big Brother, the programme is based around 10 people living in a house full of cameras with no contact allowed with the outside world. People can watch what they are doing all the time either on the Internet or on daily updates on the TV. Each week the people in the house vote for the 2 people they would most like to be evicted from the house. The people with the most nominations are voted for by the public and the one person with the most percentage of the vote gets evicted. This happens until it gets down to three people when it is just the nation who votes for the winner. The person who does win, gets £70,000 as their prize.

In Britain it has been one of the main topics of conversation since it began. One of the main reasons why it has probably been a success is because of nosiness. All humans have a tendency to find an interest in other peoples lives. This gives us the greatest opportunity to watch other people without being accused of it.

Many of the TV critics though have regarded it as absolute rubbish. Admittedly some of the people there have not been the most normal or interesting people the makers could have picked but there have been many incidents which have kept the nation riveted. There have been the many romances of Mel with Andy and then Tom and of course there has been the unforgettable tale of Darren and his chickens-perhaps not! The main event though centred around 'Nasty' Nick, as the media dubbed him. He was the person in the house who set about winning the money by doing things that were against the rules. The thing which most people thought was bad though was the way he gained peoples trust but then schemed against them to get them evicted. This of course got everyone watching and when he was found out by the other members of the house, it was splashed across the tabloids and people started watching it even more avidly. Perhaps 'Nasty' Nick has been the secret of the success of Big Brother in this country but it has also been successful all across the world - Why?

It creates tension especially when the time for eviction comes around. The reactions of the people in the house are also part of the attraction-seeing how people react to different situations and being able to say that we could do better.

The success of Big Brother has to be partly due to all the reasons but I think that 'Nasty' Nick was the main reason. Perhaps they should not have evicted him from the house but then the programme would not have got as many viewers. The media particularly the tabloids have to be thanked for giving continuing coverage of events in the house. I dare say that whoever wins (my vote goes to Anna or Craig) will say that all the people in the house were lovely and all deserved to win. However, ultimately it is a competition, which everyone of those people wanted to win which looks set for a new series next summer. Lets just hope that next year there are a bunch of people who will at least cause some controversy and be as interesting to talk about as this years lot have been. My final word has to be well done to the creators of Big Brother-whatever the reasons, you have come up with a huge hit!
