Dom's West Lindsey Football Club Match Diary Read about the exploits on the pitch by pupiline's very own football writer Dom and his team West Lindsey. SUNDAY 10TH SEPT West Lindsey V Owston Ferry 5-1
In the first match of the season, West Lindsey welcomed Owston Ferry, from the Isle of Haxey, to their Cherry Valley 'home'. After a strong pre-season, with a successful tour and tournament, all the lads were optimistic and looking forward to carrying the success into the season. 'The boys' ran onto the pitch showing the style, which has become expected in the West Lindsey camp, and the game kicked off. After ten minutes, Danny Butterworth played the ball down the wobbly line (see Paul Oakton!) to pupiline's very own Dominic Stevenson who in true 'David Beckham style' placed the ball on James Bingham's head for him to head in from eight yards, 1-0 to West Lindsey. Ten minutes later Danny Butterworth again played it to Dominic who, under pressure, played the ball into the area only to see it go over the steadily advancing goalkeeper and into the net. Two minutes later, after a frantic scramble in the box, Craig 'is my hair combed' Marchant managed to knock the ball out to Dominic who, with the outside of his right foot, volleyed the ball through the keeper's arms into the bottom right hand corner of the net. After another ten minutes and another scramble in the box, Owston Ferry's defender, under pressure from Bing, placed the ball in his own net. In a second half dominated by West Lindsey, Dominic (him again) scored a penalty and Owston Ferry scored a consolation goal near the end of the game, but by this time it was to little to late... SUNDAY 17TH SEPT West Lindsey v Messingham 1-2 In a game Dominated by West Lindsey, lady luck was on Messingham's side! Dominic and James Bingham both came close after two minutes but Messingham scored on their first attack when a shot, which was going out for a corner, was deflected off the leg of a West Lindsey defender and into the net. In the next ten minutes West Lindsey hit the post and 'a hatful of chances went begging'. In the second half Lindsey kept piling on the pressure but, totally against the run of play, Messingham broke through the Lindsey defence and scored a second. West Lindsey came back strong, piling on the pressure, and a long ball from Dominic led to Duncan Welsh skilfully chesting the ball, turning past the flailing Messingham defence, to slot the one past the goalkeeper. Lindsey continued to have chance after chance, but bad luck and an excellent Messingham goalkeeper, kept the Lindsey boys at bay.
