Changing Gears… With ChrisM, A Blow By Blow Account Of Learning To Drive

WEEK ONE

Here we go, this is the big one, I’m about to hit the road, be mobile, get some wheels, whatever you wanna call it, its time that I learnt to drive. I’ve never actually driven a car before, the closest I’ve ever got is my dad’s old sit on lawnmower, that almost ended in disaster when I closely avoided driving into the garden pond...which would have left some ecstatic (or very dead) fish. Other driving experiences include, yet again, near disaster of crashing a golf buggy into a bunker and the worst driving of a Bumper Car EVER SEEN…all I could do was go round and round in circles…BUT I WAS ONLY 8.

So before I book the lessons its time to do a bit of D.I.Y driving, I’m gonna get one of my long suffering family members, who can all drive, to take me out on a bit of private road somewhere. So I’ve just convinced my sister to take me out at the cul-de-sac at the end of my road.

Bloody Hell…that was bit of a mess up, those first steps to driving haven’t gone amazingly well, but then again taking in my previous experiences, I didn’t think they would. I managed to drive my sister’s Metro in one direction for 10 yards at about 0.5 M.P.H., with my hands crossed over the steering wheel…hunched like an Old Lady peering out of the car. Then she turned the car around and I drove back in the opposite direction. This was bit more of a successful attempt…but only a bit. I managed to reach the impressive top speed of 4 M.P.H., changed gear myself but unfortunately only brought the car to a stand still by stalling…OH DEAR. By this time I was a bag of nerves, you get quite an adrenaline rush from driving for the first time. So now its time for the next big step…my first lesson.
