Christmas Number One Rundown

Yup, pop fans, it’s that time of the year again – when Cliff Richard crawls out from his cave to release his latest "offering" - and Mr Blobby rules the airwaves.

So, who will be Christmas number one this year?

Bob The Builder - "Can We Fix It?"

First up, we have the token "novelty" record from everyone’s favourite Mr Fixit – "Bob the Builder" . This chirpy chappy’s offering is called "Can We Fix It" and (I’m being serious here!) is actually not that bad.

Neil Morrissey provides the voice for Bob, and does a good job of keeping in tune, as he sings along with the rest of the gang to a song which is catchier than chicken pox.

"Can we fix it? YES WE CAN!"

 Mince-Pie Rating: 4/5

Eminem - "Stan"

Although possibly released too early to be a contender for Christmas number one (it is in fact number one this week) - Mr.Mather's tale of a fan's obsession would surely make for one of the most controversial Christmas chart toppers in history.

Featuring a sample from "Thank You" by Dido, "Stan" makes for moody yet uneasy listening and is sure to still be high in the charts come Christmas day (check out the excellent video when you can too).

 Mince-Pie Rating: 4/5

Robbie Williams - "Supreme"

The stand-out track from "Sing When You're Winning"? - some may think so; either way, this is an obvious single choice for the chunky popster to release in time for those christmas socks.

Borrowing (stealing?) heavily from Gloria Gaynor's classic "Survive" - Robbie's latest offering slowly creeps into your head and refuses to leave - resistance is futile.

Mince-Pie Rating: 2/5 (Robbie ate the other 3)

Kylie Minogue - "Please Stay"

Lil' pixie Kylie releases "Please Stay" in time for the yuletide rush - which surely has to be to be one of the most unseasonal records ever.

Featuring cod-spanish acoustic guitars and sultry vocals from the Aussie princess. "Please Stay" nethertheless is an infectious slice of power-pop in the Stock, Aitken and Waterman tradition of classic 80's Minogue. Nice.

Mince-Pie Rating: 1/5

Craig Phillips - "At This Time Of Year"

No, unfortunately I'm not joking here - Craig "Errrrr" Phillips is releasing a "song" for Chrimbo, and it stinks worse than the muscular scouser's socks after a particularly hard workout.

Let's not be too harsh on cheeky Craig though - after all, his intentions are good; as he croons his little heart out on this slushy xmas ballad all about fluffy christmas kittens and delighted children's rosy red faces....possibly.

(Anyway, all the proceeds from this single are going to charity, so I'll stop being nasty now.)

Mince-Pie Rating: 5/5 (for being a "proper" Christmas single)

Westlife - "What Makes A Man"

Leaving the best (yeah right!) 'til last - this is surely the dead cert for Chrimbo number one and features the boys making a departure from their usual style by releasing a....(wait for it)....mid tempo, power-balled full of heartfelt-we-really-mean-it lyrics alongside moody video featuring all the boys looking really "surly" and "intense".

Anyhow, the smart money's on the boys topping the charts at Christmas for a second time running, as the Oirish fivesome can seemingly do no wrong at the moment....but just how long can it last?

Mince-Pie Rating: 2/5 (I'm feeling generous)
