Monthly Report - August 2000

Well it looks like the good times had to end. London’s West End area are to impose a curfew. The West End Authorities are determined to stamp out the hooliganism and noise pollution that has risen considerably since last year. This follows complaints from residents from around the area that borders London's most affluent areas such as Mayfair, Soho and Convent Garden. The Westminster Council stated that, "We are waging war against noise. We want to ensure local residents don’t suffer hangovers along with early morning revellers". Last year the "Iceni club" closed due to a number of complaints from residents who live around the area.

However, lucky for us, some of London's most important hangouts are not in those areas. These are the Fabric, Turnmills and the End which are based in the boroughs of Islington and Camden. These places are open minded when it comes to granting late night licenses for such events.

Well I did say watch this space, regarding the truth behind the Tuffjam stories/rumours - so here's the scoop: Tuffjam are no more.

They have decided to go their own way, with Karl and Matt working on different projects - even Djing separately. What were probably London's first proper stars to have come out of the UK Garage/UK Ground sound are now no more. I have learned from Karl "Tuff enuff" Brown that he might be teaming up on a number of projects with Todd Edwards,(New Jersey, USA).

Talking of Todd Edwards, if he does ever get to do a set in London - it's going to be a roadblock! Recently at Soho's Uptown Records, London, Todd was seen being mobbed - It was packed with people wanting to get his autograph!

We may or may not see the Tuff/Jam team together again. But one thing is for certain - they certainly did provide us with some classic moments - especially when DJ'ing live. I still reckon the best tune they produced was "Catch a Feeling" (Tuffjam mix) on Catch, London . Remember it? Wicked.

MikeyB of the Dreem Teem, Picture Copyright Camdem Palace, London Staying with a UK DJ's on the 2step garage front - "The Dreem Teem" have made the national papers....but not for the right reasons. The team's Mikey B  admitted that he had spent time behind bars for Drug dealing. He explained in The News of the World, that this was a hard lesson that he had learnt, but one that had helped put him on the straight and narrow. It seems to have worked because the Dreem Teem's show (Sunday Morning's, BBC Radio 1 (UK) has become one of the MOST popular specialist DJ’s shows. The Dreem Teem also got the thumbs up within the streets of Leeds (England) as their float and set was greeted warmly during the Love Parade event there - look's like there’s no stopping the boys!

Club@vision (the late night dance music show) has been pulled from our screens. LTW has pulled the show from its programming schedule after claims that the show broke the ITC rules by charging various clubs to appear in their later Friday night spot on ITV. Clubs such as Mezzanine, in Hull and The Brunnel Rooms in Swindon, paid around £2,000 to appear on the program.

Tony Turbo, the Swindon promoter of the "Brunnel Rooms" explained in the Daily Mirror newspaper (UK) that, "These people were on a double earner, once from us, then again from the ITV.". The Independent Television Commission forbids payment of this nature for any television coverage on UK TV. The LTW has launched an enquiry into the bribery claims themselves.

The Paradise Garage, Kings Street New York, USA, is often called the greatest nightclub ever built, and associated with it is "the Jimi Hendrix of Modern Djing"- Larry Levan. Parties were set-up recently to celebrate the great man's birthday in New York, USA. Last month at the "Dazed and Confused" gallery in London, pictures of the night club, the party goers and Larry Levan was to be found gracing the exhibition. Held until the 10th of June, 2000, it proved to be a great success.

Mel Cheren, the owner of Westend records recently signed copies of "Keep On Dancin' (My Life and the Paradise Garage at Dance Tracks, New York, USA, on the 21st July, 2000. Can any one let us know who went on that side of the pond?

Ayia Napa, Cyprus has hit the big time. You cannot fail to notice the compilation album advert's out there on UK TV, promoting the island and UK Garage DJ’s remixes.
From the Artful Dodger to Ramsey and Fen, the Dreem Teem to Shanks and Big Foot - it seems like all the majors dj's want a piece of the action. What was considered a fad when the music was being formulated in 1997/1998, has now become the biggest earner in the many genres of Garage and House.

Back now to UK Garage, another legend-in-the-making has to be M.J.Cole (London ,England). The Album is out, and Boy is it selling. Its called "Sincere", its on Talking Loud Records (England) Well, what can I say? If you’ve got a copy then you don’t need me to tell you how brilliant its. Easy to listen to at home, great played in front of an up-for-it dance floor -  here are 12 Tracks, some of them already classics, that will burn into your brain - get this.

Chicago and Guidance Records go hand in hand. There  was once a time when New York was considered the center of Hiphop and Chicago the center of House, but things have changed. Now, we see a number of world cites creating this types of music, but - with their own slant and favour.
Chicago Deep House is loved all over the world. Artists such as Glen Underground, Ron Trent and Larry Heard are considered gods to the scene. Guidance Records are seen as one of the world's best labels for this type of music. It has probably the biggest following in the Soulful House scene as we speak, stretching right around the world from  New Zealand to Canada.
