Creamy Dreamy Easter Treats

Good Ideas In Chocolate History. No.1 - The Cadbury's Creme Egg.

Y'know, when you think about it, they're not exactly the most adventurous of sweets are they? A simple Cadbury's chocolate egg, filled with dreamy fondant cream, wrapped in a little foil wrapper. But! like toast and erm…other deliciously simple food ideas - the Creme Egg has stood the test of time. Every year we munch millions of the little guys - it seems we just can't get enough.

"But Pupiline! tell me more about the good ol' Creme Egg - I need to impress my friends with some eggy-facts…."

Ok! Ok! I'll tell you more. The Cadbury's Creme Egg we know and munch today first appeared in 1971, and unlike most modern confectionery - the distinctive red and blue foil wrapper was pretty much the same then as it is now.

The Easter egg market is dominated by the Creme Egg - a minimum of 300 million are made each year, with over a third being exported. This means that 180 million Creme Eggs are sold in the UK each year - more than 3 for every man, women and child!A year's production of Creme Eggs laid end-to-end would stretch from the Creme Egg factory in Bournville, Birmingham to Easter Island in the Pacific!

Sold singly from a large display box, or (like a real-life eggy) packed in 3's, or in a 6 or 12 pack egg box, they are unique chocolate treats, closely resembling a proper egg - a rich milk chocolate "shell" with a thick fondant cream "white" and a sweet yellow cream "yolk".

If all the Creme Eggs produced were stacked one on top of the other, the pile would be over 900 times higher than Mount Everest!

Maybe surprisingly, Cadbury's only deliver their creamy treats to shops for sale between January and Easter. Cheeky shopkeepers (who just know we can't resist 'em), usually buy enough to last well beyond this, so that's why they always seem to be around!

One year's output of Creme Eggs weighs more than 1,500 African elephants!

Since the mid-70's , the familiar "How Do You Eat Yours?" slogan has always been used to advertise the choccy treats - it's widely regarded as one of the greatest ad campaigns in history and has a slightly different slant each year.

So, after that fondant-filled-fact-fest - have you started salivating yet? Is your tongue hanging out? Have your eyes turned egg shaped?
