Film Review: Traffic @ UGC, Ipswich There is simply one word for this film - amazing. It's a hot Oscar tip and is the second must-see movie of 2001, the first being Crouching Tiger, and this is what we made of it. Traffic @ UGC, Ipswich STARRING: Michael Douglas, Benicio Del Toro, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Don Cheadle, Luis Guzman, Randy Quaid, Erika Christensen, Miguel Ferrer CERTIFICATE: LINE ON THE POSTER: No One Gets Away Clean WHAT HAPPENS: It's actually three different stories surrounding different characters but they are all linked by one common element...drugs. It follows America's new Drug 'Czar' (Douglas) and his attempts to fight an impossible war against narcotics while dealing with his teenage daughters descent into addiction. While DEA agents (Cheadle and Guzman) arrest a big time dealer (Ferrer) it leads them to a druglord who they've been after for years. However his heavily pregnant wife (Zeta-Jones) must battle on to keep her family and her life together. Over the border in Mexico, tough Cop, Javier (Del Toro) has the same fight against drugs on his hands but he finds it harder to know whom is friends and enemies are in a corrupt world. ANY GOOD?: Absolutely fantastic...it's simply amazing. Very rarely can a film be so riveting that when it finished you're not quite sure where you are, because you're completely immersed yourself into it. The entire cast is fantastic, although Del Toro, Douglas, Christensen and Cheadle all deserve particular praise and Oscar nominations (in a perfect world). Add to this some of the most innovative directing of the last ten years and a soundtrack that helps heighten all the emotions associated with what's going on and you've got a terrific film. Definitely a movie that will hold you captive throughout it's immense and fulfilling 2 hours and 27 minutes and leave you wanting to see it again. BEST BIT: It's hard to bit pick because all of it is so good...but all the bits set in Mexico with Benico Del Toro as the good cop trying to fight an impossible battle against corruption are great. However the scenes of addiction are so gritty and disturbing that you'll feel a know tie in your stomach. INTERESTING FACT: This is actually a remake of a drama that was on Channel 4, about ten years ago, called Traffik. Also Zeta-Jones was heavily pregnant when filming so the script was changed for her character to be expecting. LIKED IT, TRY: The Insider, Magnolia, The French Connection or Scarface RATING:
