Movie Review: Jurassic Park III @ UGC Cinema, Ipswich

At last a film I can actually get my teeth into...hahahah, after all the rubbish on the big screen at the mo' surely a dinosaur movie can't disappoint? Can it?

Jurassic Park III @ UGC Cinema, Ipswich

STARRING: Sam Neill, William H. Macy, Téa Leoni, Alessandro Nivola, Trevor Morgan, Laura Dern

CERTIFICATE:

LINE ON THE POSTER: This Time It's Not Just A Walk In The Park!

WHAT HAPPENS: It's back to the Island again, as Dr. Grant (Neill) reluctantly accepts the job as a tour guide for a rich couple (Leoni and Macy) to view the infamous Costa Rican paradise, which housed Jurassic Park, from the air. So it's a surprise to him when the plane touches down, the couple tell him they're not rich and they are in fact after their son who disappeared while parascending off the island's coats. It's an even bigger surprise when he learns that he is in fact on island B, not the one from Jurassic Park, where deadly new species of dinosaur roam about free from cages and the lethal Velociraptors are cleverer and more deadlier than first thought. So it's a race in time to get off the island, find the missing boy and avoid death by sharp teeth but is there really any chance of escape from the terrible lizards?

ANY GOOD?: It hasn't got much in the way of a plot, the ending is abysmal but it's a great ride along the way. This is what blockbusters should be about, great set pieces, thrills and only enough dialogue to make it make sense. We've already had far too much screen time, by the way of Mummy Returns and Pearl Harbour, in blockbusters this summer, so JPIII is a real breathe of fresh in it's relatively short, 90 minute, running time. None of the characters get developed but who cares when there's fantastically large dinosaurs roaming around on a giant screen, devouring anything they come across. Plus with the introduction of a certain flying dinosaur, in one staggering 20-minute scene, it will have even the most sceptical moviegoer salivating with a racing heartbeat and an open gob. The only real downer was an ending that must have been thought up at the last minute when they spent their last dollar, yes it's that bad. However, that aside, if you're after a helluva-lot-o'-fun at the weekend you could do far worse than go see JP III, it's B-movietastic but with amazing effects and a great cast.

BEST BIT: Undoubtedly when Dr Grant realises what the giant complex they enter is used for...it's a birdcage, figure out what comes next.

INTERESTING FACT: The new dinosaur in this film, Spinosaurus, never actually existed, it's made up to add some extra excitement.

LIKED IT, TRY: Jurassic Park, Dawn of the Dead or Predator
