Coyote Ugly @ UGC, Ipswich

STARRING: Piper Perabo, Adam Garcia, John Goodman, Izabella Miko, Tyra Banks

VERDICT: A ‘Chick Flick’ with thrown in wet T-shirt contests and skimpy clothed dancers to keep the suffering boyfriends amused. No, not a contender for movie of the year

So Mr. Bruckheimer we meet again (see Gone in 60 Seconds review, forCopyright the full details) and this time you’ve got rid of the cars, guns, fights and the muscle-men, and gone back to your roots, with a dancing/music movie. Though it may be hard to believe one of, ‘Mr Action-Blockbuster’ himself, Jerry Bruckheimer’s first hit movies was ‘Flashdance’, the story of a girl who works as a welder (??!!!?) in small town America and makes it big as a Dancer. This is not something that you would expect from the producer of such macho hits as Top Gun, The Rock, Con Air and Armageddon, but it made a lot of money and that’s probably why he’s know returned to this familiar territory.

CopyrightCoyote Ugly tells the story of a beautiful girl, from small town America, who dreams of becoming a songwriter (bit strange that, she doesn’t want to be the actual singer, but just write, I mean why?). So she ups it and goes to New York to seek her fame and fortune. However upon reaching ‘the big apple’ a series of 'completely unpredictable events' (sarcasm alert!) mean she has to compromise her time spent writing her ‘tortured love songs™’ to earn a living. So far, so very, very, very much a movie for the female film-watching public.

However, obviously to make the film appeal to the ‘lads’ in the audience, Copyrightshe takes a job in madhouse bar ‘Coyote Ugly’, where the girls dance on the bar in skimpy outfit and spray themselves with water, but they also linedance (surely something that has no place in today’s society). So from here everything gets soooo predictable, there’s a hunky boyfriend, her disapproving dad, gigs and big events in the bar with all the break ups, arguments, accidents, disasters, embarrassments, make ups and success in all the places you know they’re gonna be. Don’t worry this doesn’t spoil the plot as you’ve seen it a 1,000 times before.

Was Coyote Ugly actually any good? Well I did sort of like it, but for completely the wrong reasons (no not because I enjoyed the gyrating dancers). I found that I was laughing at it a lot more than actually Copyrightgetting taken in by the cliché story-line, basically because it was soooo over the top and predictable. The amount of holes and flaws in the plot was ludicrous, but then again it’s not a film that was made to make you think. One thing in its’ defence was John Goodman’s performance, as the disapproving Dad, I mean the man is comic genius and a damn fine actor to boot.

To say it’s a movie for the girls is a bit sexist, as it’s really for people who love their films to be served with extra cheese and to be honest there’s nothing wrong with that. If you want to just go to the cinema to take your mind off things, for a couple of hours, by looking at beautiful people who have perfect lives, then this is just what you’re looking for. Otherwise steer clear, unless you want to see an, unintentionally, funny comedy.
