Movie Review: Tomb Raider @ UGC Cinemas, Ipswich So far this summer all the big blockbusters have caused huge disappointment, they're never the greatest movies of all time but they should entertain, which they've nearly all failed to do. However could things change with the shapely form of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider? We took a look. Tomb Raider @ UGC Cinemas, Ipswich STARRING: Angelina Jolie, Iain Glen, Jon Voight, Daniel Craig, Leslie Phillips, Noah Taylor, Chris Barrie CERTIFICATE: LINE ON THE POSTER: Born into wealth. Groomed by the elite. Trained for combat WHAT HAPPENS: Based on the popular video game, Tomb Raider the movie features an adventure by the games main character, Lara Croft (Jolie). Lara is a wealthy, British archaeologist/tomb raider who is haunted in her dreams by her father, also an archaeologist, who mysteriously disappeared when she was a young girl. The dreams lead to the discovery of a antique clock, which in fact houses the key to an ancient and extremely powerful device. However there is also a secret society after the key and they will stop at nothing to get their hands on it, even demolishing Lara's priceless mansion in the middle of the night with soldiers and machine guns. So it's up to Lara to find two pieces of the ancient device (hidden in the opposite ends of the Earth), get back the key and prevent the secret society rare from having it during a planetary alignment that would bring them unlimited power to control or destroy the Earth. Piece of cake really..... ANY GOOD?: This is a dreadful, dreadful, dreadful mess of a movie and another nail in the coffin of hope for a good summer 2001 blockbuster . Ok Jolie is superb as the babe of every computer boy's dreams, she was born to be Lara but that provides little substance for a full-length movie. She oozes sex appeal but the film doesn't even slowly drip any excitement or entertainment. The action sequences having seemingly been taken from an incredibly bad straight to video action film made in 1983 and are laughable rather than effective in getting the adrenaline pumping or the heart racing. The pace of the film is painfully slow and the supporting cast of heroes and villains are so insubstantial in character that you could easily forget they're there. Sorry Angelina you're beautiful and an amazing big screen siren destined for hugeness but this film is a waste of anybody who's unfortunate enough to see it's time. Avoid BEST BIT: Chris Barrie as Lara's butler, Hillary, is the only entertaining elements in this tragic movie, hamming it up with all the best bits of his Red Dwarf, Rimmer, personality. INTERESTING FACT: The film has actually been cut in the UK to get a 12 certificate, so it's missing a few headbutt scenes and knife fights, not that it makes much difference as the action is sooooooo lame anyway. LIKED IT, TRY: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Lost in Space or Mortal Kombat RATING:
