Movie Review: Shrek @ UGC Cinemas

This is going to be the big film for Summer 2001, it's already taken the states by storm, raking in over $200 million and is set do the same here. Does it deserve all the praise and plaudits plus the box office success? We took a look.

Shrek @ UGC Cinema, Ipswich

STARRING: (the voices of....) Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, John Lithgow, Vincent Cassell

CERTIFICATE:

LINE ON THE POSTER: The greatest fairy tale never told

WHAT HAPPENS: In a faraway, mythical and magical land called Duloc, the characters from fairytales have been banished by the diminutive and heartless ruler, Lord Farquaad (Lithgow). The characters have taken refuge in the garden of a green, smelly ogre with a heart of gold called Shrek (Myers). Wanting a peaceful life of bathing in mud and eating disgusting creatures, Shrek isn't too happy about this especially when a talking Donkey (Murphy) takes a shine to him and won't shut up about helping the plight of the poor fairytale characters. So Shrek strikes a deal with Lord Farquaad, if he rescues the beautiful Princess Fiona (Diaz), whom Farquaad wishes to make his wife so he can become king of Duloc, then the fairytale characters can go free and Shrek can have his quite life back. However this is a fairytale itself with a difference, where you never know what's gonna happen.

ANY GOOD?: My god...this is a wonderful film, much in the same way as Toy Story 2, where you walked out with a huge grin, wanting to see it all over again, Shrek will do everything it promises to you. It's hilarious, enthralling, smart, sharp, witty, action-packed and above all else a helluva-lot-o'-fun. Whenever good animation hits the screens the same old adage of 'it's got bits for the kids and bits for the adults' gets trotted out, yes it's true about Shrek, it really has moments of humour that will fly straight over a six-year old's head but only a cynic with a heart of stone could dislike the whole feel and energy of Shrek. Myers is on top form, adopting a broad and warm Scottish accent as the ogre Shrek, while Murphy proves that he is funny after all (have you seen Nutty Proff 2?) as the talking Donkey...Donkey. With so many recent big blockbusters being big disappointments, Shrek is a breath of fresh air. If you miss out on this then you'll miss out on the best big release of the summer.

BEST BIT: An inspired 'borrowing' from The Matrix sees Princess Fiona take on Robin Hood and his Merry Men, using 'bullet-time' style flo-mo Kung-Fu moves and kicking ass in the process.

INTERESTING FACT: The film is so full of Disney spoofs and parodies that the studio behind it, Dreamworks, actually asked for Disney's permission before they released it so they wouldn't get sued.

LIKED IT, TRY: Antz, Toy Story 2 or The Princess Bride
