Movie Review: Dracula 2001 @ UGC Cinemas Everybody loves a good horror film, especially when it involves fave Transylvanian bloodsucker...Dracula, but can it live up to the legend? We took a look. Dracula 2001 @ UGC Cinema, Ipswich STARRING: Justine Waddell, Johnny Lee Miller, Gerard Butler, Colleen Fitzpatrick, Jennifer Esposito, Jeri Ryan, Sean Patrick Thomas, Christopher Plummer CERTIFICATE: LINE ON THE POSTER: The most seductive evil of all time has now been unleashed in ours WHAT HAPPENS: Dracula is brought into the 21st Century as the famous Vampire-hunter, Abraham Van Helsing (Plummer), hides a very dark secret both in his personal life and in his cellar, both of which will soon be opened. Firstly by thieves who rob a mysterious coffin from the gothic confines of Van Helsing's mysterious cellar/dungeon. The coffin gives them more than the riches they bargained for, as when they open it a bloodsucking beast is unleashed upon them making them creatures of the night. While in the New Orleans Van Helsing's daughter Mary (Waddell) is haunted with strange dreams of this mysterious handsome creature. So Van Helsing and his new assistant Simon (Miller) travel from London to New Orleans to rescue Mary from the mythical beast otherwise known as....Dracula. ANY GOOD?: No, no, no, no, no, no, no...this movie is already a definite for the top ten worst films of 2001. It's dreadful, absolutely every single little thing about this turgid excuse for a motion picture will make you run out of the cinema have a hot shower and watch a good horror film like Halloween, actually compared to this Leprechaun would do. At so many times during its painful but thankfully short running time, Dracula slipped into an unintentional but hilarious farcical comedy. Forget Scary Movie this is the real deal. The dialogue was so poor it seemed like the script had been cut and pasted from a series of Ed Wood movies and it was so badly delivered it's conceivable that the actors were reading from cue cards with no rehearsal, particularly the usually good Johnny Lee Miller. When it comes to the actual plot, well there's less holes on all the golf courses in Britain and the entire idea went against all the mythology and mysticism of the Dracula legend. If you see this you'll be angry that the filmmakers took away 2 hours of your life...yes it's that bad. BEST BIT: The continual product placement of Virgin Megastores is the funniest thing in this sorry mess that passes for a movie, notice how many times they keep trying to slip it in the background or on a T-shirt or on a van or on a record etc etc etc. INTERESTING FACT: This film was made in 1999 and then released as Dracula 2000 in the USA, it's now called Dracula 2001 as the release date was continually put back...I wonder why... LIKED IT, TRY: Dracula, Bram Stoker's Dracula or Blade RATING:
