Movie Review: The Mummy Returns @ UGC Cinemas

The big  big, big, big film hitting the screens this week is The Mummy Returns, it's destined to be one of the biggest money-earners of all time but does it deserve it? We took a look.

The Mummy Returns @ UGC Cinema, Ipswich

STARRING: Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, Oded Fehr, Patricia Velazquez, Freddie Boath, The Rock

LINE ON THE POSTER: He will rise again

WHAT HAPPENS: It's 1935 and 10 years after the goings on that happened in 'The Mummy'. Dashing and reckless explorer Rick O'Connell (Fraser) has now settled down and married to Evelyn (Weisz) with a son, Alex (Boath), and living in London, in between trips to Egypt on archaeological expeditions. However an improbable series of events leads to the evil Imhotep (Vosloo) being brought back to life as the mummy, kidnapping the O'Connell's son and once again being hell bent on immortality, resurrecting his true love and destroying the world. However this time another destructive force is after the same goals, the Scorpion King (The Rock) and this means that the O'Connells are on a desperate race to save the world from these twin evils and rescue their son before it is too late...

ANY GOOD?: Well if you're after an intelligent story-line and a plot that makes sense, you're going to be sorely disappointed but then who goes to watch a film like this wanting those requirements. This baby is all about special effects, action and the thrill of watching something that's so dumb and loud the big screen and huge speakers were made for it. This rocked big time and is another landmark in the world of the big-money blockbuster and jaw-dropping special effects. Alright the plot was just there to showcase a series of cracking set pieces but anything that has midget mummies, a London Bus chased by mummified priests, an opening sequence straight from Raiders of The Lost Ark, ancient Egyptian Princesses sword-fighting and a WWF wrestler as a giant Scorpion fighting two men with Matrix-style effects is worth two hours of anybody's time. See it....!!!!!!!!!

BEST BIT: As they enter the oasis leading to the tomb of The Scorpion King, night falls and slowly the bad guys are picked off one by one in the long grass (Velociraptors in Lost World style), but what could be so small and vicious to cause this carnage?

INTERESTING FACT: WWF Wrestler, The Rock made such a huge impact in his part as The Scorpion King that the filmmakers are already making a prequel to the Mummy, called The Scorpion King (despite the fact he's only on screen for about 15 minutes in this film).

LIKED IT, TRY: Raiders of The Lost Ark, The Mummy, Lost World or Stargate
