Movie Review: The Dish @ UGC Cinemas

It's the one of the biggest money earning films in Australian Box Office history and has received praise all around but is this low budget flick any good? We took a look.

The Dish @ UGC Cinema, Ipswich

STARRING: Sam Neill, Kevin Harrington, Tom Long, Patrick Warburton, Genevieve Mooy, Tayler Kane, Bille Brown

LINE ON THE POSTER: As Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon, our only link was a satellite dish in rural Australia with a few bugs (And a few hundred sheep).

WHAT HAPPENS: July, 1969, one week from one of the most famous events in the history of mankind...the moon landing. In Parkes, Australia, four men, thousands of miles away from NASA HQ, have one of the most important roles to play in the mission. They are in charge of the Parkes Satellite dish, which will relay the pictures of the first man to walk on the moon to all the millions of people around the world watching this monumental occasion. It should be a fairly routine job but never the less it's one that can't be cocked up or there will be big trouble. However when power cuts, cricket, sheep, arguments and high winds get in the way you never know what's gonna happen.

ANY GOOD?: It's one of those films that looks like it has nothing to offer, no big names, a rubbish trailer and a potentially boring story-line....but you couldn't be more wrong. The Dish is an absolutely excellent tale that charms the pants off you with a witty script, quirky characters, touching moments and a heart-warming story. Film veteran Sam Neill is excellent as the 'Dishmaster', in charge of the operation, but all the Australian actors are fantastic in support and the film should be appreciated for a fine all round cast performance. It is by far one of the funniest films you will see this year and if you can't raise a smile to it then you're probably the kind of person who finds 'The Wedding Planner' hilarious. The Dish deserves to be seen by everybody but will probably end up being ignored by everyone, which is a shame as if you miss you really are missing out.

BEST BIT: When a power-cut takes out the down, the dish goes down as well, how do you tell NASA that you've lost the first manned space-flight to the moon?...You don't...you lie!

INTERESTING FACT: Shy and retiring scientist Glenn's love interest is played by Eliza Szonert, who for all you Neighbours fans played Danni Stark from 1993-1996.

LIKED IT, TRY: Apollo 13, The Castle or Strictly Ballroom
