Movie Review: Thirteen Days @ UGC Cinema, Ipswich Kevin Costner is back on old ground, with a thriller involving President Kennedy. He's in need of a hit but will he get one? We took a look. Thirteen Days @ UGC Cinema, Ipswich STARRING: Kevin Costner, Bruce Greenwood, Steven Culp, Dylan Baker, Henry Strozier CERTIFICATE: LINE ON THE POSTER: You'll Never Believe How Close We Came WHAT HAPPENS: 1962 and the Soviet Union moves a consignment of Nuclear Warheads into the island of Cuba, which neighbours the USA. Unbeknown to them the American's have spotted the weapon's installation and are considering action, but which way should they go military or political. The weapons have the capability of wiping out most of the Eastern and Southern United States in minutes so any wrong move could signal the end of the world. It is up to the President Kennedy (Greenwood), his assistant Kenny O'Connell (Costner) and his brother Booby (Culp) to make the right decision to protect America and the world. As the thirteenth day of the conflict approaches, what will be the outcome? ANY GOOD?: Thirteen Days is an absolutely riveting political thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat despite its long running time. It's testament to a fantastically crafted film when you now the ending (because it's a well-recorded historical event ) but nevertheless are gripped and enthralled throughout. After a string of decidedly dodgy movies Costner puts in a performance that nearly redeems those mistakes of the last five years and although he's the only well-known face, the rest of the cast don't let him down. Greenwood and Culp are excellent as the Kennedy's Jack and Bobby and the supporting roles as the members of the government are resoundingly convincing. The whole Kennedy dynasty is supremely fascinating so any insightful film based on the JFK administration is always welcome. Thirteen Days is and intelligent, engaging and insightful movie, which deserves your attention. BEST BIT: The final 40 minutes is so tension packed that you will be glued to the screen, will the world end? INTERESTING FACT: Kenny O'Donnell's son Kevin has a short part in the film at the beginning as an NPIC photo Interpreter, he was also one of the film's producers.
