Movie Review: Born Romantic @ UGC Cinema, Ipswich

Born Romantic @ UGC Cinema, Ipswich

STARRING: Craig Ferguson, Olivia Williams, Jane Horrocks, Adrian Lester, Jimi Mistry, Catherine McCormack, David Morrissey, Ian Hart

CERTIFICATE:

WHAT HAPPENS: Set in London, around different people who go to a Salsa club and what happens in their love lives. The film centres on three different couples and the different characters, which entwine their stories together. There's Fergus (Morrissey) who's after the love of his is life Mo (Horrocks), who he jilted years earlier. Frankie (Ferguson) is a greased-up Sinatra loving 50's throwback who tiries to woo the uptight Eleanor (Williams). Finally the 'Worst Mugger In The World'®, Eddie (Mistry) tries to steal from weirdo grave-keeper Jocelyn (McCormack) but ends up falling for her.

ANY GOOD?: This is probably the most boring movie that you might have the misfortune to see this year. The fact that it is only 100 minutes long, but felt twice that length, is a testament to how sleep inducing it is. It seemed really promising as well, due to the terrific ensemble cast, which reads like a 'Who's Who' of British actors. However even quality actors can't redeem a film that has a script this bad, the pace of an incredibly lazy snail and characters as deep as shallow puddles. When so many other movies have told the story of a group of strangers who never really meet but are connected some way, in so much more style and panache (Magnolia, Short Cuts, Wonderland to name a few), Born Romantic seems a complete waste of time. One of the worst films of the year....without a shadow of a doubt. Avoid.

BEST BIT: Adrian Lester part as a philosophical cab driver, who carries the central characters to their different destinations, is the only well-written bit and his performance is a cut above the rest.

LIKED IT, TRY: Magnolia, Wonderland or This Years Love
