Movie Review: The Gift @ UGC Cinema, Ipswich

Sam Raimi is the man behind the fantastic Evil Dead series and is also in charge for the new Spiderman movie. We took a look at his new film to see if it really is scarier than The Sixth Sense.

The Gift @ UGC Cinema, Ipswich

STARRING: Cate Blanchett, Keanu Reeves, Giovanni Ribisi, Katie Holmes, Greg Kinnear, Hilary Swank

LINE ON THE POSTER: The only witness to the crime was not even there

WHAT HAPPENS: In a redneck town in the middle of Nowheresville, USA a weird tale unfolds around a woman and her psychic abilities. Annie Wilson (Blanchett) reads the fortunes of the locals using Tarot cards and some believe that she may have 'The Gift'. So when a young woman (Holmes) goes missing the police and the family look to her as the last chance to locate her. Not only that but Annie has two friends (Ribisi & Swank) calling on her abilities to try and fend off suicide and an abusive husband (Reeves). Can Annie help them and find the missing woman? And are all the happenings and mysterious goings-on somehow inter-linked?

ANY GOOD?: It's not bad but maybe just a little too predictable to make it a Roller-Coaster ride of a thriller like 'The Sixth Sense' was. This is mainly due the lack of a really huge twist that tears you stomach in two, which great thrillers like 'Silence of the Lambs', 'The Usual Suspects' and of course the aforementioned 'Sixth Sense' all have. Still it has some genuinely scary, chilling and hair-raising moments to keep all you supernatural horror fans happy. A huge plus is the presence of Director Sam Raimi, as the film looks stunning and has a fantastic slow but fiery pace that really pulls you in and shocks you with each turn. Added to this is a cast that most people would give their right arm for, the brilliant and divine Blanchett, the exciting Ribisi, an on-song Reeves and of course the beautiful Holmes. Go late, make sure it's quiet and frighten the life outta yourself....go on you deserve it.

BEST BIT: Towards the end of the film Katie Holmes' fans will be really pleased.

INTERESTING FACT: Star of the film and of The Matrix, Keanu Reeves' first name is Haiwaiian for 'The Coolness' and can be interpreted as 'The Cool Breeze over the Mountains'.

LIKED IT, TRY: Evil Dead 2, The Sixth Sense or What Lies Beneath
