Movie Review: The Legend of Bagger Vance @ UGC Cinema, Ipswich

Good movies about golf are few and far between...meaning there aren't any. A couple of golfing comedies are pretty good, namely Caddyshack and Tin Cup, but a dull sport generally make a dull movie. However with The Legend of Bagger Vance that could all change.

LINE ON THE POSTER: It Was Just A Moment Ago.

WHAT HAPPENS: A local golfing great, Capt. Rannulph Junah (Damon), goes to fight in the Great War and comes back a completely disillusioned veteran. He decides to retreat from his life, his love Adele (Theron) and golf. Ten years later, however, he reluctantly agrees to play again to help Adele save the golf course her dead Father built as the Deep South of America is affected by the Great Depression. Unfortunately Junuh has lost all his belief in his ability to play but this may change when a mysterious golfing caddy, Bagger Vance (Smith), turns up in the middle of the night. Could Bagger teach him the secret to a perfect swing, which could also help Junuh master any challenge and find the meaning in life?

ANY GOOD?: For a golfing movie, it is really good and in general it's a great watch. Although a bit slow moving, 'Bagger Vance' is riveting, mainly due to the endearing performances put in by the lead actors and actress. Also a winner is the direction and cinematography, as the film looks absolutely spectacular and could transport anybody far away from a bad day. Golf is well known as a sport played by fat, balding business execs but Bagger Vance is actually more about life and relationships than Tiger Woods' occupation. So if you've got an aversion to the sport of wedges, putts and greens, don't be put off as you'll be missing out.

BEST BIT: Rannulph Junuh (Damon) finally finds his swing and plays an amazing round of golf.

INTERESTING FACT: Star of the movie Will Smith met DJ Jazzy Jeff (who he rapped with and is good friends with) whilst at a party in LA. Will told a joke and Jazz was the only one in the room who laughed.
