The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle @ UGC Cinema, Ipswich

STARRING: Robert De Niro, Rene Russo, Jason Alexander, Piper Perabo, Randy Quaid and the Voices of Keith Scott and June Foray.

CERTIFICATE:

LINE ON THE POSTER: This summer it's not the same old bull.

WHAT HAPPENS: Rocky and Bullwinkle, now retired from their show, are bored of life in their cartoon world, as their enemies are defeated for good so they set about campaigning for trees. Meanwhile their defeated foes Fearless Leader (De Niro) Boris (Alexander) and Natasha (Russo) somehow manage get into the real world and it's not good news. Fearless Leader has decided he will take over the world through bad TV. Only Rocky and Bullwinkle can possibly stop them, so the FBI enlist Agent Karen Sympathy (get it?) to bring Rocky and Bullwinkle into the real world so they can save the day.

ANY GOOD?: No, which is a shame as it could have been pretty good, especially with the fantastic cast that was involved. The bits where De Niro was on screen, camping it up as Fearless Leader, were quite a laugh but they only totalled about 10 of the painful 90 minutes of this movie. The real problem is that although (if you can remember) the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon was good in 5-minute segments it really doesn't work for a full-length movie. By the end the bloody squirrel becomes so irritating that you will either have to leave the cinema, get violent or grind your teeth down to the gums. Give it a miss.

BEST BIT: The bit where De Niro takes the piss out of himself by doing an impression of Travis Bickle from 'Taxi Driver', who he played, doing the famous 'You Talking To Me' bit.

INTERESTING FACT: In the movie when they visit the University the infirmary is labelled "J. Ward," which is a tribute to the cartoon's creator, Jay Ward.

LIKED IT, TRY: Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Cool World or Elmo's Trip to Grouchland
