Film Reviews: Vertical Limit & Beautiful Creatures @ UGC Cinema, Ipswich Two new movie releases once again reviewed before they hit the cinema. Vertical Limit @ UGC Cinema, Ipswich STARRING: Chris O'Donnell, Bill Paxton, Robin Tunney, Scott Glenn CERTIFICATE: LINE ON THE POSTER: Hold Your Breath WHAT HAPPENS: After the death of their father in as nasty mountainerring accident brother and sister climbing team, Peter (O'Donnell) and Annie (Tunney), take very different routes. Annie becomes the world's best female climber and Peter takes pictures of wildlife. However when Annie gets stuck up treacherous mountain K2, Peter must confront his fears by scaling the mountain to rescue her. However she trapped in a cave so they have to take huge amounts of explosives up to get them out....the only catch? Bang the explosives and everybody dies. ANY GOOD: The dumbest of the dumb, even if you like your movies thick and cheesy you'll find this a bit too much to take in. The plot is full of holes and the film is full of mistakes and gaffs that sometimes it's more of a comedy than an action-thriller. Having said that after 45 minutes I stopped trying to take it seriously and switched off, then the film became a lot more enjoyable and the action sequences were fairly exciting. So maybe best to view this if you really want to switch off for a couple of hours...but otherwise it's a very crap film. BEST BIT: The avalanches, very realistic and a bit scary. INTERESTING FACT: The 28,000 foot tall "K2" is actually in Pakistan, however the filmmakers used Mt. Cook in New Zealand for the backdrop for all scenes involving the infamous peak. LIKED IT, TRY: Cliffhanger, Alive or K2 RATING: Beautiful Creatures @ UGC Cinema, Ipswich STARRING: Rachel Weisz, Susan Lynch, Alex Norton, Iain Glen CERTIFICATE: WHAT HAPPENS: Dorothy (Lynch) is leaving due home due to the psychotic nature of her drug-dealing boyfriend. While waiting at the bus stop she rescues Petula (Weisz), from a beating from her boyfriend, by hitting him on the head with a giant pole. Unfortunately this kills him and the women are forced, by fate, to try and cover up the wrong they've done. ANY GOOD: No...it's absolute crap, this is why the British have such a bad reputation at the moment when it comes to making movies. The plot makes no sense, the characters are poorly written, it's totally predictable and the violence is absolutely horrifying and I like violent movies! This film is the first to be made and released using Lottery Money, well it should have been spent on something a lot better. Avoid this one...it's a waste of time and money. BEST BIT: The 'Big Shoot out'...what will happen next? INTERESTING FACT: Alex Norton, who plays the deceiving Police Inspector, has appeared in such classic TV programmes as Lovejoy, Bergerac, Juliet Bravo, Blackadder and The Sweeney. LIKED IT, TRY: Blood Simple, True Romance or Shallow Grave RATING:
