Film Review: Cast Away @ UGC Cinema, Ipswich

Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks goes for the hat-trick with a film that basically stars him and a Volleyball. But is it any good? We took a look.

STARRING: Tom Hanks, Helen Hunt, Nick Searcy, Lari White, Geoffrey Blake and a Volleyball

CERTIFICATE:

LINE ON THE POSTER: At the edge of the world, his journey begins

WHAT HAPPENS: Obsessed with the time and his job, Fed-ex employee Chuck Noland (Hanks) has to be away for Christmas because of his committment to his job, much to the dismay of his 'true love' Kelly (Hunt). Promising he'll be 'right back',  Chuck's plane crashes into turbulet seas somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. Managing to find his way to shore, Chuck soon realises he is the only survivor and is stranded on an island. Will he be able to get food and water, make fire and survive the harsh conditions and the isolation? Or is it impossible to survive with nothing, after living your life in the modern world?

ANY GOOD?: Yes and no, everything is fine when Hanks is stranded on the Island, but the bits when he isn't are very boring and over-sentimental. However if you can get through those scenes then the shipwrecked, or in this case plane-wrecked, bit is truly enthralling. Be warned though, the hour and a half Hanks is stranded (in the film it's 4 years) doesn't make for comfortable watching. At times it's quite unpleasent with some dark undertones, but that actually made it more compelling.

BEST BIT: Discovering how to make fire.

INTERESTING FACT: Tom Hanks put on loads of weight for the first bit of the movie and then lost 55lbs and grew a huge beard and long hair for second part of the movie, to get the authentic 'Robinson Crusoe' look.

LIKED IT, TRY: Blue Lagoon, Pappillon or Six Days, Seven Nights
