What Lies Beneath @ UGC Ipswich STARRING: Michelle Pfeiffer, Harrison Ford, Diane Scarwid, Catherine Towne VERDICT: Thrilling, scary, gripping, surprising, over the top, all in all a great film. Critics have been absolutely torn over this film, it’s received what’s known as a ‘Marmite Reaction’, people have either loved it or absolutely despised it. So, which group do I fall into? I have to say that, I thought the film was top-notch, not a classic by any means but certainly the best film to have come out in the last few months, though the competition has been relatively poor. The major criticisms, by those who hated it, tend to focus on the fact that for the $90 million, it took to make the film, there isn’t much on show, apart from two very expensive leading Hollywood actors. For me that’s not really much of a criticism, as movies cost ludicrous amounts of money and no amount of bitchin’ will change anything, so at the end of day, I think a movie should be simply judged on how good it is. Strange that, it’s blatantly obvious reviews should be written that way but many critics have failed to do this and therefore should be completely ignored. So, after all that, I imagine you would like to know what the film’s about, well you’re only going to get a little bit, as on the trail of last years smash ‘The Sixth Sense’, this is a ghost movie with A HUGE TWIST at the end. That means I’m not gonna say something like ‘you never guess what happens at the end, well Pfeffier is… ~*!*!*~~@….’ (don’t worry that’s not a clue, it’s just nonsense). Basically Stepanie (Pfeffier) is feeling uneasy and she doesn’t know why, she has the perfect husband (Ford), the perfect daughter, who’s gone off to college, and she has just given up the perfect job, so she now spends her whole day relaxing in the beautiful surroundings of her perfect lakeside house. However there are a lot of things in her past that don’t add up and now she thinks she is seeing a ghost who looks exactly like her. Then things start building up to reveal something incredibly sinister. With an idea by ‘Blockbuster King’ Steven Spielberg, directed by ‘Back to the Future man’ Zemeckis and the top class acting of the still gorgeous Pfeffier and ‘Mr Charisma’, Han Solo himself, Harrison Ford, the amount of talent on show here is incredible. However it is Pfeffier who carries the whole film with a superb unhinged edge, as a woman who’s not sure whether it’s her or the world around that’s going mad. Why Ford was given top billing is confusing and surely highlights that sexism in the Hollywood studios is still abundant. Why not charting any new territory, Hitchcock fans will be very familiar with the way its shot and how the story progresses, the film will entertain, shock and scare all the way from start to end. Although all the scares seem to be placed in the ‘correct’ positions, meaning you know when they’re exactly gonna happen, the film made me jump without fail and surely that’s what you want from movie like this. Go along and see it, you’ll either love it or hate it (if you do hate it, then you’ll think I’m talking complete crap) but it’s definitely worth watching.
