Scary Movie @ UGC, Ipswich

Starring: Anna Faris, Shannon Elizabeth, Carmen Electra, Marlan Wyans

Verdict: A new twist for the 'spoof' movie, the horror film, that hits some highs but also stoops to new lows.

The big movie genres have also led to detractors taking the piss…sometimes by making a movie highlighting all the clichés and absurdities of those films. The 60's westerns were parodied in the 70's, 70's disaster films in the 80's, 80's megabucks Blockbusters in the 90's and now the Teen Slasher film of the 90's is being ripped into for laughs in the 00's. When these films get it right, they can go down as greatest comedies of all time (stand up Naked Gun, Airplane) but get them wrong and they can be real stinkers (take a back seat, Spy Hard). So how does Scary Movie rate?

Well the plot is basically what you've all seen before, Scream If I Know What You Did Last Halloween (The actual original title for the film). It does mimic Scream, practically scene for scene, starting with 'Drew' (Electra) being staked and killed in her house while making popcorn and sitting down to watch a 'Scary Movie', moving to the scenes in the school to the finale blood-bath at the drunken house party. In between this we have bits from IKWYDLS, IKWYDLS2, Sceam2, The Usual Suspects, Blair Witch, The Sixth Sense, Pulp Fiction, The Exorcist, Halloween, Alien and probably a great deal more that you'd pick up on repeated viewing.

The problem is that it takes the piss out of a film that was taking the piss in the first place, Scream, which is probably one of the best films of the 90's that was taking the piss out of 80's horror flicks. Therefore while it is very funny in places, overall it is a tad pointles,s as Scream was firmly 'Tongue in Cheek', unlike the other film genres which are so often 'spoofed' through films because they took themselves far too seriously.

However these are only a minor concerns and probably a bit too picky, as if you just want laughs due to gross-out humour then this is the film for you. Most of the gags I can't go into, as they're not suitable in these surrounds and I don't want to ruin them for you, see it first hand but just don't expect the greatest comedy of all time as its been hyped up to be.
